In the formal sense, politics refers to the realm of governance and the manners in which people engage with systems of government and vice versa. In a less formal sense, politics can refer to the ways in which people navigate social settings to achieve a position of power. For instance, one could describe the politics of a social club.
Political science is the study of politics, generally in the more formal study of governing systems. If someone studies political science in higher education, that person is likely to study politics on a broader scale, both domestically and internationally, and then eventually choose a specific area to focus their studies. One may choose to focus on local politics within a specific region, the politics of two countries in conflict, etcetera.
The Oxford Dictionary defines politics as, "the activities associated with the governance of a country or other area." Therefore, politics is simply any action or event that has to do with government on either the local, state, or national level. This can also refer to almost any activity associated with government. For example, voting on a law, attempting to set the platform for a political party, or receiving backing for a bill to present to Congress would all be considered to be in the realm of politics.
Political science is simply the study of politics. Political science is often studied at the high school and university level. Many universities and colleges offer political science as a major and many "Poli Sci" majors go on to law school before entering the world of government and politics for themselves. Political science allows students and researchers to better understand various actions and events that take place in the political realm.
