In chapter 3, the Amoses make Bud sleep in their shed as punishment for hitting their son Todd. In the dark shed, Bud sees a bat hanging from the rafters and fears that the bat will suck his blood like a vampire. In an attempt to kill the bat, Bud grabs a rake, stands on a woodpile, and swings at the bat as hard as he can. However, Bud does not hit the bat and accidentally hits a nest of hornets. Suddenly, Bud hears the buzzing and rattling of hundreds of hornets flying out of their nest and throughout the tiny shed. Bud gets stung several times and attempts to run through the door of the shed to no avail. Fortunately, Bud ends up tearing open the small window of the shed and escapes as the hornets fly after him. After rolling on the ground several times, the hornets leave Bud alone, and he begins plotting his revenge on the Amos family.
