The proverb "it takes a village to raise a child" is attributed to the Igbo and Yoruba people of Nigeria. It was famously used by Hillary Clinton as the title of her book It Takes a Village: And Other Lessons Children Teach Us. It basically means that an entire community is responsible for the upbringing of children. Not only should parents be involved in child rearing but also extended family, friends, and anyone else who believes in the unity of the society.
Langston Hughes demonstrates this proverb in his short story "Thank You Ma'm" about a teen boy who tries to steal the purse of an older woman. Roger grabs Mrs. Jones's purse thinking he will run away with it and use the money he gains to buy blue suede shoes. Mrs. Jones overpowers the youth and then drags him back to her apartment where she cooks him dinner.
Roger remarks that there is "nobody home" at his house, suggesting that he is neglected by his parents. Mrs. Jones seems to recognize this and invites him to share her meal. She treats him fairly and eventually Roger understands that the woman trusts him. At one point he could have taken her purse and run out of the apartment, but instead,
...the boy took care to sit on the far side of the room where he thought she could easily see him out of the corner of her eye, if she wanted to. He did not trust the woman not to trust him. And he did not want to be mistrusted now.
At the end of the story the boy is unable to come up with the proper words to thank Mrs. Jones but implicit in the ending is the idea that Roger will take a different path in life because of the kindness and wisdom of a woman in his community.
