Bud actually does want to go back to the home, but he lies and tells Mrs. Amos that he really does not. He tells her this because he has already worked out at a young age that you have to lie to adults about what you really want in life. If Bud admits that he does want to be sent back to the home, then Mrs. Amos will probably insist on Bud staying put, and that is the last thing Bud wants. Life in the Amos household is pretty rough, and Bud falls on the receiving end of numerous beatings from Mrs. Amos's son, Todd, who is a really nasty piece of work. But in Mrs. Amos's eyes, her darling son can do no wrong, so Bud realizes that there is no way he is ever going to get a fair shake as long as he stays with the Amos family.
