The greatest surprises that await Gulliver happen when he awakens on the island. When he does, he realizes that he is on his back and is totally unable to move. His arms and legs are tied down, and even his long thick hair is securely tied to the ground. Gulliver then feels something moving along his body, almost up to his chin. (Being unable to move at all, and feeling something, perhaps a spider or snake, crawling up our body, would be terrifying to us all.) Gulliver sees that the thing on his body is "a human creature not six inches high, with a bow and arrow in his hands, and a quiver at his back." Gulliver will later learn that these little creatures are called Lilliputians.
