Intermediate Algebra, Chapter 4, 4.1, Section 4.1, Problem 22

Solve the system 3x5y=17y=4x+8 by substitution. If the system is inconsistent or has dependent equations.

Since equation 2 is solved for y, we substitute 4x+8 for y in equation 1.

3x5(4x+8)=17Substitute y=4x+83x20x40=17Distributive Property23x40=17Combine like terms23x=23Add each side by 40x=1Divide each side by 23

We found x. Now we solve for y in equation 2.

y=4(1)+8Substitute x=1y=4+8Multiplyy=4Add
