After initially hearing the legends and rumors surrounding their enigmatic, reclusive neighbor, Boo Radley, the children continue to develop the mystery surrounding him by consulting Miss Stephanie Crawford. Miss Stephanie Crawford fuels the children's imaginations by telling Jem outrageous rumors and stories regarding Boo Radley's childhood. Jem elaborates on these stories and creates his own horrifying image of Boo Radley by telling Dill and Scout,
Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained—if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time (Lee, 13).
After Jem tells them stories about Boo, Dill continues to develop the mystery surrounding him by coming up with schemes to get Boo out of his home. In addition to writing Boo letters, Jem also develops a game entitled "One Man's Family," and the children reenact various moments of Boo's life. The children take it one step further and even raid the Radley yard in an attempt to get a look at Boo. In short, the children continue to develop the mystery surrounding their reclusive neighbor by retelling rumors and legends about him, reenacting scenes from Boo's life, attempting to contact him, and even trying to peek through his windows at night.
