There appears to be evidence for both the inevitability of the American Revolution as well as a potential resolution between the empire and the colonists. Some reasons that argue the inevitability of independence include Britain's heavy-handed rule in light of the economic hardships experienced after the Seven Years' War and the colonists growing resentment and thirst for independence. On the other hand, colonists' contributions and loyalty to the empire during the Seven Years' War might suggest that colonists may have sought resolution if given the opportunity.
In the aftermath of the Seven Years' War, Britain needed funds to rebuild so they imposed taxes on the colonists, including the Stamp Act. The colonists took serious issue with this, since they were no longer represented by parliament and intended to pay local colonial taxes. The colonists' opposition seemed to harness Britain's determination not only to gather funds but also to assert their control over the colonies. All of this came to a head with the shots fired at Lexington and Concord. Perhaps if the empire were not so desperate for funds and control, a resolution could have been made.
Prior to the Stamp Act and other events leading to the first shots fired at Lexington and Concord, colonists seemed to continue to take pride in their affiliation with the empire. This is evidenced by their involvement in the Seven Years' War. Their trust and loyalty towards Britain seemed to shift, however, when Britain began to force their authority. The colonies already relied on self-governing strategies and were simply unwilling to give this up.
