A limb refers to one of the jointed appendages found either on the human body or on the body of an animal. Limbs are categorized into two sections, upper limbs, which are attached to the upper body, and lower limbs, which are attached to the lower body. Even though both the upper and lower limbs were originally used for locomotion by all animals including primates, evolution brought about changes that enabled environmental adaptability. For instance, in man, the forelimbs are referred to as arms and have three segments: the arm, forearms, and hand. They were initially used for locomotion but are now used for grasping, holding, and writing.
Among the rest of the animal kingdom, limbs are still primarily used for movement such as walking, running, jumping, and climbing. However, in some, the forelimbs are used for carrying, digging, and manipulation. In birds, the forelimbs are wings that facilitate flying, while in sea creatures like the whale, they are flippers that enable swimming.
