What would be an alternative ending for My Side of the Mountain?

Based on the wording of the question, the answer to this question is completely wide open. Any possible alternative ending to the story that a reader puts forth would technically work. The actual ending to the story sees Sam's family arriving and deciding to build a proper house for the family and Sam. Sam’s mother cannot let him live on his own anymore. His parents feel the need to care for him in a real home until he turns eighteen. One possible ending would be that Sam's parents realize that Sam is fully capable of surviving and doing it well enough that they let him continue living on his own. Another possible ending is that Sam returns home. He has proven to his family and himself that he could make it on his own; therefore, he is willing to return home until he is eighteen.
