What was Johnson's main idea on religion in America?

Several factors impact the way Johnson was and is seen with regards to his views on the intersection of both politics and religion.
Primary among these intersections was what has been called the “Johnson Amendment,” which was actually the title given to a provision integrated into the US Tax Code of 1954. Though only a senator when promoting the amendment, Lyndon Johnson was able to garner enough support to get his motion passed. It has managed to remain on subsequent tax codes, even until the present day.
The actual nature of the provision itself has been considered another hallmark in legislation attempting to secure the division of church and state in the United States. Briefly put, it stated that those organizations claiming tax deductions on the basis of their connections to religious organizations could not legally and openly support or withdraw support in political elections. Debates over the presumed legality of the Johnson Amendment have painted different portraits of Johnson in both his presidential and non-presidential actions. Generally speaking, religious groups, especially evangelical sects, are still quite vocal in their opposition to the amendment.
Passing this legislation gave further credence to moral conservatives’ insistence that the main Democratic Party was changing in some crucial ways. These included a hard shift towards promoting legalism and civil rights, which many saw as threatening “American values,” marking one aspect which may have motivated many Southern Democratic states to switch to Republican in the following years and even becoming a rather hot topic in the Nixon years.
Moral conservatives today are predominately Republican in terms of political affiliations and have pressed their representatives to repeal the Johnson Amendment. Many Republican leaders continue to state their support for its repeal. In 2017, President Donald Trump passed the "Presidential Executive Order Promoting Free Speech and Religious Liberty," which, among other things, sought to overturn the Johnson provision via the executive branch. As of the most recent tax reform initiatives, the Republican legislators have not succeeded is repealing the amendment, much to the chagrin of moral conservative voters.
