What a fun question! First of all, the Hermes House band hit "Country Roads" is a cover of John Denver's 1971 hit "Take Me Home, Country Roads." The lyrics are the same, and contain 3 verses with a refrain:
"Country roads, take me homeTo the place I belongWest Virginia, mountain mommaTake me home, country roads"
John Denver was an American folk singer. He co-wrote the song with Bill Danoff and Taffy Danoff (Nivert). John Denver's version climbed up the charts, but slowly. Denver wasn't well known in 1971, and his only other hit was "Leaving on a Jet Plane."
In contrast, Hermes House is a Dutch pop band. They hit fame in 1994 with another cover song, "I will survive." Their cover of "Country Roads" hit #7 on the UK Singles Chart in 2001.
Hermes House set their cover of this song to a techno beat. It is much faster than the original version. Interestingly, the song is slowed down after the third verse to a similar tempo to John Denver's original. Then, it slowly speeds back up to the techno beat tempo. There are banjos and guitars in both versions.
A woman sings the lead (Robin Maas) in the Hermes House version. There are harmonies in John Denver's version, but a straight melody line with multiple singers on the Hermes House cover.
