"Sweat" is a short story by Zora Neale Hurston, in which we see a woman named Delia outlast the abuse of her husband, Sykes.
Sykes has always mistreated Delia, and has never helped her to build their home in any way. As the narrator tells us, Delia knows it is too late to try to salvage their marriage, but not "her little home. She had built it for her old days, and planted one by one the trees and flowers there. It was lovely to her, lovely." This makes it clear that Delia's home is very important to her. And so, when Sykes begins using a snake to try and drive Delia out of her own house, so that he can bring his mistress in, we see that religion is the one thing Delia can depend on.
We already knew that Delia was a devoted church-goer, even switching churches so that she could continue going every Sunday without having to see Sykes. But when she returns from the "love feast" sermon, and begins singing, feeling that her "domestic trials were borne far and wide," we see that Delia has a deep connection with her religion, and depends on it to give her the strength to keep going. Even when hiding from the escaped snake, she says
Well, Ah done de bes' Ah could. If things aint right, Gawd knows taint mah fault.
