College Algebra, Chapter 8, 8.2, Section 8.2, Problem 44

Determine the equation for the ellipse with eccentricity 32, foci on y-axis and length of major axis 4.
The equation x2b2+y2a2=1 has a horizontal major axis with forci (0,±c) in which lies on y-axis. Where as
c2=a2b2 and the length of axis is 2a. Also, the eccentricity is determined as ca. So if 2a=4, then a=2.
And if ca=32, then

c2=32a=3

Thus,

c2=a2b2b2=a2c2b2=122(3)2b2=1b=1

Therefore, the equation is
x212+y222=1 or x2+y24=1
