In a representative democracy, the elected representatives are supposed to listen to the wishes of the majority of their constituents, and then they would cast their votes accordingly. In this form of democracy, the people need to be in communication with their elected officials so that these officials are able to know what the majority of the people want them to do.
In a democracy, the people have more influence and involvement in their government and in their government's activities than in other, nondemocratic forms of government. They either are directly involved in the government or they determine who will represent them in the government to make decisions for them.
