What are some examples of symbolism in Jonathan Edward's "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"?

Symbolism in literature is the power of objects and images within a text to represent larger, figurative ideas. Symbolism can be very effective in rhetorical writing and speech, because it allows for the audience to latch on to a memorable image that will resonate the idea in their memories. Jonathan Edwards, as a preacher, leans heavily on symbolism, since religious texts are full of them. In "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God," Edwards employs the use of symbolism in order to make tangible the horrors and the proximity of hell, as he perceives it.
One example of Edwards's symbolism is as follows:

The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked. His wrath towards you burns like fire; he looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the fire. He is of purer eyes than to bear you in his sight; you are ten thousand times as abominable in his eyes as the most hateful, venomous serpent is in ours.

Here, the spider stands as a symbol for sinners—and sinners are just about everyone to Edwards—so every member of the audience is this spider, dangling over fire at the mercy of a supreme being who is disgusted with them. It's a scary image that is meant to provoke fear and dread into the hearts of these Puritans, for, in Puritan belief, strict adherence to scripture and societal standards was the only course to understanding one's place in the spiritual hierarchy. Deviance was highly discouraged, and shame and punishment were common to those who were caught in acts of sin. Edwards is attempting to scare his congregation onto the straight and narrow path of conformity, and anyone who believed that they were loathsome enough to be punished in this manner would certainly remember the symbol of the spider dangling over eternal flames whenever moments of temptation would arise.
