In chapter 12, Calpurnia takes Jem and Scout to Sunday service at First Purchase African M.E. Church. When Calpurnia and the children enter the church, they are confronted by an ornery woman named Lula, who is upset that Calpurnia has brought white children to First Purchase African M.E. Church. Lula approaches Cal and says,
I wants to know why you bringin‘ white chillun to nigger church (Lee, 120).
When Calpurnia responds by telling Lula that Jem and Scout are her company, Lula proceeds to criticize Cal for bringing the Finch children to the African American church. Lula tells Cal that she has no business bringing white children to their church because white people have their own separate churches. Fortunately, Zeebo intervenes, and Lula leaves Calpurnia and the Finch children alone for the remainder of the service. Unlike Lula, the other members of the congregation are happy to see Jem and Scout and welcome them with open arms.
