Is a banana ripening a chemical change?

Chemical changes are those changes where chemical reactions take place and changes in chemical composition occur. This may include the breakdown of complex chemicals into simpler chemicals or the combination of simpler chemicals to yield more complex chemicals. Chemical changes in fruits are generally evident in the form of changes in color, softening of the fruit, changes in the taste of the fruit, and so on.
When a banana ripens, a number of changes take place. These may include: changes in color and texture, softening due to the breakdown of the constituents, changes in the sugar content, and so on. Thus, the ripening of banana is a chemical change.
In comparison, the physical changes are not accompanied by a change in chemical composition. Some examples of physical change include the processes of evaporation, melting, condensation, freezing, sublimation, and so on. In each of these, the phase change takes place but the substance remains the same.
Hope this helps.
