Darry takes his role as a guardian very seriously. He works as a roofer to support his family, and he does everything he can to keep his brothers together. The judge has allowed Ponyboy and Sodapop to live with Darry as long as they stay out of trouble, and it's clear that Darry has devoted himself to making sure that they do.
It is true that Darry is sometimes very hard on Ponyboy and gets angry at him when he doesn't do well at school or when he gets into trouble. However, Darry always has the right motivation at heart. He knows that Ponyboy is academically talented, and he wants to make sure that Ponyboy has the chances that he never did to go to college and move beyond the life of a worker. Darry has in effect sacrificed his own youth and education to make the future better for his brothers.
Darry is a good guardian and positive role model for Ponyboy and Soda for multiple reasons. Even though Darry is only twenty years old, he is a responsible, selfless person. Ponyboy mentions that Darry passed up on an opportunity to accept an athletic scholarship to go to college in order to support him and Soda. Darry also works two jobs throughout the novel in order to provide for his younger brothers. In addition to working multiple jobs, Darry supervises both of his brothers and is very involved in their lives. Even though he comes off as overbearing sometimes, Darry cares about Ponyboy's grades and well-being. Darry continually displays his concern for Ponyboy throughout the novel and wants him to succeed in the classroom. In addition to being a responsible guardian and providing for Pony and Soda, Darry also physically defends his brothers. The Curtis boys live in a relatively rough area, and Darry goes out of his way to make sure that his brothers are safe.
