What is the inner conflict of the writer in the story?

The writer or narrator's inner conflict rests on whether Tanya is worthy of her immaculate reputation for moral purity. The writer's inner conflict drives the plot and adds suspense to the story. Like the narrator, we are led to wonder whether Tanya deserves the adoration of the twenty-six bakers.
In the story, the twenty-six bakers lead a dreary existence producing pretzels (biscuits) on a daily basis in their basement-level bakery. They are overworked, poorly paid, and deeply unhappy with their lot in life. Tanya, a sixteen-year-old chambermaid at an embroidery shop, is the only light in their empty lives.
The men worship and adore her. They believe she is both beautiful and pure, an angel who graces their existence with color, light, and life.
Eventually, a bulochnik (white-bread baker) is hired next door, threatening the peace of the pretzel workers. This bulochnik is also a soldier, and he revels in his ability to seduce any woman he meets. The pretzel bakers worry that he will seduce Tanya as well. Eventually, one of the pretzel bakers issues a challenge to the soldier, which the latter accepts. The soldier then confidently announces that he will seduce Tanya in two weeks.
All twenty-six men are up in arms at the thought. While they fault their fellow pretzel baker for issuing the challenge, they are also interested in the outcome. All maintain that Tanya will never allow herself to be debauched in such a humiliating way. However, they are eventually faced with the bitter truth of Tanya's humanity. So, after Tanya succumbs to the soldier's seduction, all twenty-six men corner her and subject her to vicious verbal abuse. Their anger betrays their deep pain at the destruction of a facade that has long sustained them.
