Intermediate Algebra, Chapter 5, 5.2, Section 5.2, Problem 82

Solve [(4m28m+4m3)(3m2+2m+5m3)]+m2
Reorder the polynomial 4m2−8m+4m3 alphabetically from left to right, starting with the highest order term.

(4m3+4m28m)(3m2+2m+5m3)+m2

Reorder the polynomial 3m2+2m+5m3 alphabetically from left to right, starting with the highest order term.

(4m3+4m28m)(5m3+3m2+2m)+m2

Multiply 1 by each term inside the parentheses.

4m34m2+8m(5m3+3m2+2m)+m2

Multiply 1 by each term inside the parentheses.

4m34m2+8m5m33m22m+m2

Since 4m3 and 5m3 are like terms, subtract 5m3 from 4m3 to get 9m3.

9m34m2+8m3m22m+m2

Since 4m2 and 3m2 are like terms, subtract 3m2 from 4m2 to get 7m2.

9m37m2+8m2m+m2

Since 7m2 and m2 are like terms, subtract m2 from 7m2 to get 6m2.

9m36m2+8m2m

Since 8m and 2m are like terms, add 2m to 8m to get 6m.

9m36m2+6m
