Spring, as with all seasons, is completely different in the jungle. In most other places, spring would mean the complete transformation of the earth, from a bare, lifeless patch, to a profusion of freshness and color. But not in the jungle. Here, the onset of spring is both simpler and yet, at the same, more remarkable than elsewhere. Before the spring arrives, everything seems so tired and stale; the air is heavy and dank. But with spring comes a profusion of new and exciting smells. To the eye, everything seems unchanged, but it's in the intoxicating smells of the jungle that spring can truly be said to have arrived.
And it's not just the sense of smell that's stimulated by the sudden burst of spring in the jungle. You can almost hear the bamboos and the mosses and the juicy-leaved plants as they start to grow after a little rainfall. There is an unmistakable sound to their growth, a strange kind of hum, a deep, vibrating boom that is truly astonishing. It it this remarkable feast for the senses that makes the jungle-spring the most wonderful of seasons.
