Tom Sawyer's been up to mischief again. Aunt Polly's discovered there's some jam missing from the pantry, and there can only be one culprit. Polly grabs hold of Tom and confronts him over the missing jam. She presents a fearsome sight, what with her face contorted with anger and with that switch she's holding hovering menacingly over her startled nephew. Tom looks a dead cert for a damn good whipping. But he's a cunning young scamp, this Tom Sawyer. He pulls the oldest trick in the book, telling Aunt Polly to look behind her. Polly turns round, letting go of Tom as she snatches up her long skirts out of danger. Tom seizes his chance and runs out of the house as fast as his legs can carry him. In a matter of seconds, Tom has scrambled up the high fence and disappeared over it. He's escaped punishment. For now.
