what is the theme of daughter by ashe bandele

The main themes of Daughter by Asha Bandele are the complexity of the mother/daughter relationship and the threat of police brutality against African Americans. So, we've got two central themes in the novel.
The story centers on Miriam's struggles to reconcile the deaths of Bird (her husband) and Aya (her daughter) at the hands of police officers. Miriam's anger is further complicated by her previously ambivalent relationship with Aya. Having herself experienced friction in her relationship with her own mother, Miriam finds it difficult to process her overwhelming feelings of guilt after Aya's death.
Filled with grief, Miriam questions whether she was an effective mother. She wonders why she didn't reject her mother's dysfunctional perspectives about womanhood. So many of Miriam's decisions in life have been fear-driven, and yet in instilling that fear, Miriam's mother had only meant to keep her daughter safe.
In the end, none of the proper "rules" Miriam learned by heart (and passed on to Aya) mattered. Miriam knows that they didn't save Aya. In her bitterest moment, all Miriam feels is cold anger. Whatever her mistakes have been, she is convinced that the police had no right to shoot Aya, her only daughter.
On the day of the shooting, Aya had been jogging. She wore a black hooded sweatshirt and pants. It was, unfortunately, the same clothing worn by a black male suspect who had shot a convenience store owner. Even more unfortunately, Aya had a similar build as the suspect. The police, believing that they had spotted their shooter, ordered her to stop. However, Aya didn't comply. Here, the text does tell us that Aya had been listening to her Walkman. This may be the reason she didn't comply with police orders: she didn't hear them.
Instead, Aya turned around slowly while reaching into her sweatshirt. The police, thinking that she was reaching for a gun, fired multiple times at the defenseless girl. Aya died almost immediately.
Later in the book, we learn that Bird (Aya's father) was also shot and killed by the police. At the time of the shooting, Miriam had been pregnant with Aya. Driven mad by grief, Miriam's thoughts eventually turn violent. As the story ends, Miriam is in jail for "reckless endangerment and the criminal possession of a firearm." The more serious charge, the attempted murder of a police officer, has been dropped.
So, the main themes in the book are the complexity of the mother/daughter relationship and police brutality against African Americans. Through Miriam, Bandele highlights the complexity of female emotions. Maternal guilt competes with righteous indignation, with the latter prevailing.
