Find an equation of the line that pass through (12,23) and perpendicular to the line 4x8y=1.

If the line is perpendicular to 4x8y=1, then its slope is equal to the negative reciprocal of the other.


4x8y=18y=4x1Add 8y and subtract 1y=48x18Divide by 8y=12x18


By observation, the slope of the line perpendicular line to 4x8y=1 is m=2.

By using Point Slope Form


y=mx+by=2x+bSubstitute m=223=2(12)+bSolve for b23=1+bSimplifyb=13


Thus, the equation of the line is..

y=2x+13
