College Algebra, Chapter 1, 1.1, Section 1.1, Problem 100

Suppose that the average daily food consumption F of a herbivorous mammal with body weight x, where both F and x are measured in pounds, is given approximately by the equation F=0.3x34. Find the weight x of an elephant that consumes 300lb of food for day.

Let F be the daily food consumption,
x be the weight of an elephant.

Equation F=0.3x34
F=300lbs.

300lbs0.3=\cancel0.3x34\cancel0.3Divide both sides by 0.3x34=1000lbsRaise both sides by 43(x34)43=(1000)43lbsSimplifyx=[(103)13]4lbsSimplifyx=(10)4lbsSimplifyx=10,000lbs

The weight of the elephant which consumes 300lb of food per day is 10,000 lbs.
