Cuba declared war on Germany following the United States’ similar declaration a day earlier. The President of Cuba, General Mario G. Menocal presented his position to the Cuban Congress proposing the war against Germany due to Germany’s violations of international law. The Cuban Congress enthusiastically and unanimously agreed to support the president’s recommendations and war efforts against Germany.
Cuba had resolved to enter the world stage and defend the shared liberties and sovereignty that were being threatened by a nation advancing imperialistic ideals with the aim of dominating the entire world. Cuba seized German steamships and turned them over to the United States to be used in the war. The Cuban Red Cross was reorganized and funded in order to prepare it to provide medical assistance to soldiers wounded in the war. The country also established a fund to aid the Allies financially. Additionally, Cuba enlisted troops to fight in the war on European soil.
