In chapter 5, Daniel attempts to recruit Joel and travels to the city of Capernaum. Daniel arrives at Rabbi Hezron's home and is astonished to see the massive house for the first time. When Daniel enters Rabbi Hezron's home, he compares it to Herod's palace, and he is overwhelmed by its beauty and magnificence. He feels a sense of embarrassment being in such a marvelous home, and he is taken aback by the rabbi's extensive wealth. When Joel initially greets Daniel at the door, he asks him to remove his cloak, which was common practice when entering the home of a Pharisee. Daniel feels self-conscious knowing that his undergarments are extremely worn underneath his cloak. After Joel takes Daniel to his room, Daniel becomes less self-conscious, and he enjoys the beautiful environment of Joel's room. During dinner with Rabbi Hezron, Daniel is once again taken aback by the extravagant lifestyle of Joel's family. He flinches when he first sees the silver saucers and is immediately overcome with hunger. Overall, Daniel feels self-conscious and astonished after witnessing the extreme display of wealth inside Rabbi Hezron's home.
